Get Certified: Operators
ABC offers certification to operators in water treatment, distribution, very small water systems, wastewater treatment, collection, and industrial waste. Along with examination requirements, the following education and experience requirements must be met for ABC certification:

| Class I | High school diploma, GED, or equivalent | 1 year of acceptable experience |
| Class II | High school diploma, GED, or equivalent | 3 years of acceptable experience |
| Class III | High school diploma, GED, or equivalent; 900 contact hours of post high school education | 4 years of acceptable experience including 2 years of direct responsible charge |
| Class IV | High school diploma, GED, or equivalent; 1,800 contact hours of post high school education | 4 years of acceptable experience including 2 years of direct responsible charge |
| Very Small Water Systems | ||
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, Six contact hours of very small water system education |
Six months of acceptable operating experience of a very small water system or higher utility. | |
Individuals who do not meet the above requirements may still be eligible through ABC’s system that allows for substitution of education and experience. In addition, ABC offers an “in-training” certification to those applicants that do not yet meet our education and experience requirements.
Along with meeting the education and experience requirements, the operator must pass the ABC Certification Exam or an equivalent exam with a score of 70% or higher. For more information about the examination, please refer to Examination Resources.
